MCCQE scoring and the pass score

The MCCQE reports a scaled score, not a percentage. Here is what the numbers mean.

The scale

Scale300 to 600
Mean and spreadMean 450, standard deviation 30 (as the MCC describes the scale)
Pass score439 — set by a panel of physicians in July 2025 for the new format
Wrong answersNo penalty — each question is scored 1 or 0 before scaling

Your total accounts for question difficulty, so it isn't simply the number you got right. You pass if your total is at or above the pass score, regardless of how other candidates did.

Why old pass scores don't apply

With the CDM section removed in April 2025, the MCC moved to a new scale starting with the April–May 2025 session. Older figures you may see online, such as pass scores on a 100–400 scale, belong to the previous format.

Attempts

Per the MCC, a fail (or a denied standing) counts as an attempt. After a third attempt you must wait one year before a fourth and final one. Attempts before 2018 don't count.

What this means for practice
